Course overview

Skills Training Group’s air source heat pump course (ASHP) will allow engineers to specify, survey, design and install domestic and small commercial air source heat pump systems up to 16kW.

The course includes a written and practical assessment which includes multiple-choice questions and a design scenario. After passing your assessment, you will receive an RQF Level 3 Award in the Installation & Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems from LCL Awards.

Modules breakdown

The key learning topics we cover on the course will include:

  1. Learn about the health and safety hazards as well as safe systems of operation associated with air source heat pump systems.
  2. Learn about the regulations and standards that apply to air source heat pump installations, testing, and commissioning.
  3. Learn about the function and operational characteristics of heat pump unit & heat pump components.
  4. Learn about the components of an air source heat pump system’s purpose and operational characteristics.
  5. Learn about the different types of air source heat pump systems and the arrangements for hydraulic emitter circuits
  6. The principles of air source heat pump selection and system design
  7. Learn about the design factors and principles relating to air source heat pump systems
  8. Learn about the preparatory work required for air source heat pump installations
  9. Understand the specifics of how to install, commission, and deliver air source heat pumps
  10. Understand how to organise and prepare for the installation of air source heat pump systems.
  11. Learn to install air source heat pump systems.
  12. Learn how to test and commission air source heat pump systems.
  13. Be able to hand over to the client air source heat pump systems.
  14. Understand the criteria for inspecting, servicing and maintaining air source heat pump systems.
  15. Understand how to diagnose and repair air source heat pump system problems.
  16. Ability to inspect, service, and maintain air source heat pump systems
  17. Be competent in fault diagnosis and repair of faults and failures on air source heat pump systems.

One of the below qualifications will allow entry to the ASHP course:

  • N/SVQ LEVEL 2/3 IN PLUMBING OR EQUIVALENT EARLIER CERTIFICATION THAT PROVIDES EVIDENCE OF COMPETENCE;
  • N/SVQ LEVEL 2/3 IN HEATING AND VENTILATING (DOMESTIC INSTALLATION) OR EQUIVALENT EARLIER CERTIFICATION THAT  PROVIDES EVIDENCE OF COMPETENCE;
  • N/SVQ LEVEL 2/3 IN HEATING AND VENTILATING (INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL INSTALLATION) OR EQUIVALENT EARLIER CERTIFICATION THAT PROVIDES EVIDENCE OF COMPETENCE;
  • N/SVQ LEVEL 2/3 IN OIL-FIRED TECHNICAL SERVICES OR EQUIVALENT EARLIER CERTIFICATION THAT PROVIDES EVIDENCE OF COMPETENCE;
  • N/SVQ LEVEL 2/3 IN GAS INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OR EQUIVALENT EARLIER CERTIFICATION THAT PROVIDES EVIDENCE OF COMPETENCE.
  • ACS QUALIFICATION

How will I learn and be assessed?

The Air Source Heat Pump Installation Course includes both theory and practical training, culminating in a practical & theoretical exam at the end of Day 3.

During training, candidates will be able to operate a fully operational heat pump unit as well as work on real equipment in a functioning room.
