The EV sector is an incredibly exciting new industry that is suitable for experienced electricians who are looking to expand on their current range of services and generate additional revenue or specialise in EV charging installations. With Government targets to reduce emissions and tax benefits for driving electric vehicles, more people are becoming encouraged to purchase electric vehicles.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have experience installing electrical installations in domestic and/or non-domestic premises, as well as the following qualifications:

  1. Requirements for electric vehicle charging equipment installations.
  2. Know and identify Equipment of, and differences between, the four charging modes, and Wireless Power Transfer types (WPT).
  3. Preparation for the design and installation of electric vehicle charging equipment.
  4. Be able to prepare to design and install electric vehicle charging equipment.
  5. Installation of electric vehicle charging equipment in domestic, commercial and Industrial Locations.
  6. Requirements for initial verification and handover of an electric vehicle charging equipment installation.
  7. Be able to conduct inspection and testing, and finish the handover to the client.

Do I need this course?

Electric vehicle charging course exams & assessment

You’ll undertake two types of assessment during your course:

  • Online Multiple Choice Exam
  • Practical Assessment

Please note that you must provide a form of photographic ID such as a passport or a driving license at least 5 working days before the course start date. We need this to register you for your electronic assessment.

You can use your own tester for the practical assessment as long as it complies with GS38.

What's covered in an EV charging course?

An EV Charging Course provides knowledge and understanding of electric vehicle charging systems for candidates who are interested in becoming qualified EV charging technicians. The course covers a range of topics related to EV charging, including an introduction to EV charging, charging methods and technologies, and the installation process. The course also includes a section on electrical safety, covering topics such as conduit and protection, 4th edition wiring regulations, and compliance with BS 7671.

The EV Charging Course is typically offered by training centres and is available as part of an installation course or as a standalone certificate program. The course is often supported by a range of materials including books, webinars, and links to support resources. The course can also include practical components, such as hands-on experience with tools and systems, and is completed with a certificate or diploma, demonstrating the candidate's competence in EV charging.

EV training course entry requirements

The following requirements must be met in order to enroll in this EV charging training:

Age requirements: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
Qualifications: Candidates must be practicing electricians with a formal Level 3 qualification.

Competencies: Candidates must be capable of carrying out the following duties:

With a minimum Level 3 qualification, such as C&G 2365 or NVQ, you can work on both domestic and commercial electrical installations.

Install and terminate PVC/PVC cable (twin and earth) and Steel Wire Armored (SWA) cable correctly.
Complete the necessary paperwork after performing an initial verification (inspection and testing) on an electrical installation.

Keep up with the most recent Building Regulations and 18th Edition wiring regulations.
