IOSH Managing Safely is a practical health and safety course for people responsible for other employees. It is suitable for managers, supervisors and team leaders across industries, whether you are new to the role or want a structured understanding of your responsibilities.
You will learn to identify hazards, assess and control risks, investigate incidents and review safety performance. Classroom discussions and exercises help you connect these principles to your own workplace.
Successful completion of the written and practical assessments leads to the IOSH Managing Safely certificate.

What you will learn
Seven areas take you from understanding your responsibilities to putting safer working practices in place.
- Introducing Managing Safely: understand why health and safety matters and the part managers play.
- Assessing risks: distinguish hazards from risks and work through a structured risk assessment.
- Controlling risks: compare control measures and choose proportionate ways to reduce risk.
- Understanding responsibilities: explore management responsibilities and the role of health and safety law.
- Understanding hazards: recognise common workplace hazards and consider who could be harmed.
- Investigating incidents: look beyond immediate events to identify causes and lessons.
- Measuring performance: use practical checks and indicators to review how well your arrangements work.
Assessment and your IOSH certificate
Training manuals are supplied at the start of the course. You will complete a written assessment and a practical assessment, putting your understanding of workplace risk into practice.
When you successfully complete both, you receive the IOSH Managing Safely certificate. Certificates are normally sent within two to three weeks of successful completion.
The certificate does not expire. A Managing Safely refresher helps you keep your knowledge current as your role and workplace change.
IOSH membership is separate: you do not need to be a member to attend, and passing does not automatically make you a member.

Can I take the full course online?
Our full IOSH Managing Safely course is delivered in the classroom at Paisley or on site for teams. The live online option is our one-day Managing Safely Refresher, which is for people who have already completed the full course.
How much does the course cost?
The classroom course is £450 including VAT (£375 + VAT) per learner. Check your selected booking for the final price and arrangements. For on-site delivery or five or more public-course places, call 0808 164 2780 for a quote.
What assessment and certificate will I receive?
You must successfully complete the written and practical assessments to receive the IOSH Managing Safely certificate. Certificates are normally sent within two to three weeks of successful completion.
Does my certificate expire?
No. IOSH Managing Safely certificates do not expire. IOSH recommends refresher training every three to five years to keep your knowledge current; your employer may have its own requirements. Explore the one-day refresher.
What if I need support or another assessment attempt?
