Which first aid course do I need?

To find out which course you need will depend on your workplace:

Low hazard workplaces

Examples of low hazard workplaces include offices, shops, and libraries.

  • Up to 25 employees: at least one ‘appointed person’ that takes charge of first aid equipment and facilities, and can contact the emergency services if needed. The appointed person should also provide cover during a first-aider’s absence;
  • 25 to 50 employees: at least one first-aider trained in EFAW (emergency first aid at work);
  • 51+ employees: a minimum of one first-aider trained in FAW (first aid at work) per 100 employees.

Higher hazard workplaces

Examples of higher hazard workplaces include engineering facilities, chemical manufacturing, food processing and warehousing.

  • Up to five employees: at least one ‘appointed person’ that takes charge of first aid equipment and facilities, and can contact the emergency services if needed. The appointed person should also provide cover during a first-aider’s absence;
  • 5 to 50 employees: at least one first-aider trained in EFAW (emergency first aid at work) or FAW (first aid at work), depending on the types of injuries most likely to get sustained by employees;
  • 51+ employees: at least one first-aider trained in FAW per 50 employees.

Frequently asked questions

Why should my employees attend a first aid training course?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require you to provide first aid equipment, facilities, and people so your employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work. First-aid assessments of some businesses will find that only an “appointed person” is required – this role does not require training. Other businesses, however, will legally require one or more staff to receive training and gain either the EFAW or FAW qualifications, depending on the outcome of your first aid assessment.

How Long Does A First Aid Training Certificate Last For?

In most cases, first aid certificates last for three years before they need to be renewed, but the HSE recommends a refresher course every year. When you complete your first aid at work training course or an emergency first aid course, you will be awarded a certificate, which will be valid for three years. When it comes time to renew your first aid certificate, you need to take a two day refresher course to get your new certificate. This refresher needs to be completed within 28 days of the expiration date on your previous certificate.

Other types of first aid certificates have different rules about expiry and renewal. For example, a paediatric first aid at work certificate can be renewed every three years but an AED defibrillator certificate is only valid for one year before you need to take a refresher course to renew it.
