Why should my employees attend a first aid training course?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require you to provide first aid equipment, facilities, and people so your employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work. First-aid assessments of some businesses will find that only an “appointed person” is required – this role does not require training. Other businesses, however, will legally require one or more staff to receive training and gain either the EFAW or FAW qualifications, depending on the outcome of your first aid assessment.

Why choose Skills Training Group for first aid training?

The first aid training courses offered by Skills Training Group are accredited by the FAIB, so your employees will leave with an officially recognised qualification (either EFAW or FAW, depending on the requirements of your business). Our aim is to make the process as easy as possible for you by delivering the courses on-site at your business premises if needed. In addition, we only employ highly experienced trainers, guaranteeing that your staff will receive high-quality training and complete the course with all of the knowledge that they need.

Which course do I need?

To find out which course you need there are a few factors to take into consideration. They are as follows:

How many employees do you have?

The number of first-aiders you have in your business or organisation will depend on how many employees you’ve got.

According to HSE’s guidelines regarding the first aid legislation, there aren’t any specific rules concerning how many first-aiders you should have. They do, however, give some guidance depending on how many workers you have and what they do:

Low hazard workplaces

Examples of low hazard workplaces include offices, shops, and libraries.

Higher hazard workplaces

Examples of higher hazard workplaces include engineering facilities, chemical manufacturing, food processing and warehousing.

Note: if you need training for more than one FAW or EFAW first-aider at your workplace, Skills Training Group can provide volume discounts.

How Long Does A First Aid Training Certificate Last For?

In most cases, first aid certificates last for three years before they need to be renewed, but the HSE recommends a refresher course every year. When you complete your first aid at work training course or an emergency first aid course, you will be awarded a certificate, which will be valid for three years. When it comes time to renew your first aid certificate, you need to take a two day refresher course to get your new certificate. This refresher needs to be completed within 28 days of the expiration date on your previous certificate.

Other types of first aid certificates have different rules about expiry and renewal. For example, a paediatric first aid at work certificate can be renewed every three years but an AED defibrillator certificate is only valid for one year before you need to take a refresher course to renew it.
