- Protection must be provided against DC residual fault current. The protective device must detect a smooth DC residual current of 6 mA or more — provided either by an RDC-DD built into the charging equipment, or by a Type A/Type F RCD combined with a residual direct-current detecting device (RDC-DD to BS IEC 62955), or by a Type B RCD.
- On PME (TN-C-S) supplies, additional measures are required to manage the open-PEN conductor fault risk — for example an open-PEN protective device that disconnects on a dangerous voltage, or a dedicated TT earthing arrangement (earth electrode) for the EV installation.
- The installation must be carried out by a competent, qualified electrician and certified, inspected and tested in accordance with BS 7671.
- Amendment 4:2026 clarifies that Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) are not required on circuits supplying EV charging equipment that uses socket-outlets or vehicle connectors to the BS EN 62196 series.
