Course overview
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a nationally recognised CITB qualification for individuals who coordinate, oversee, or manage construction activities. It is widely required by principal contractors, local authorities, and major developers across Birmingham and the UK, making it an essential credential for site leadership roles.
This course is delivered in an online live classroom with a CITB-approved trainer, giving you full access to real-time teaching, discussion, and group exercises from any suitable location. The experience mirrors the interactivity of traditional classroom learning while offering greater flexibility for busy construction professionals.
For companies with six or more delegates, we can also deliver the complete SMSTS programme on site at your Birmingham workplace. Both delivery formats follow the complete CITB syllabus and result in the same officially recognised SMSTS certification.

Entry Requirements
This course is delivered in English only. Delegates must have a good level of written and spoken English to participate fully and complete the assessments. If you are unsure about suitability, please contact us before booking.
Course Materials
All delegates receive the official CITB Construction Site Safety GE700 publication along with additional course handouts. These resources are yours to keep and serve as long-term references for managing safety on site.
Assessment
To gain your SMSTS qualification, you must:
- Attend all five days of training
- Participate in group discussions and interactive learning exercises
- Complete daily knowledge checks
- Pass the final multiple-choice examination
This structured approach helps reinforce knowledge and build practical confidence in applying safety principles.
Qualification & Renewal
On completion, you will receive the CITB Site Safety Plus SMSTS Certificate, which is valid for five years. This qualification is widely required for site management, supervisory, and senior technical roles throughout the UK construction industry.
To renew your qualification, you must complete the 2-day SMSTS Refresher Course before your certificate expires.

Taking part in the online SMSTS course is simple. To participate in the virtual classroom, you will need:
