Course overview
Run by Skills Training Group, this one-day PAT testing course in Birmingham takes you from electrical safety theory in the morning to genuine hands-on testing in the afternoon, all in a single day. Working on professional PAT testing machines, you’ll learn to inspect, test, log and judge the safety of portable appliances the way it’s actually done on the job — and you’ll leave able to do it confidently in line with current UK requirements.
Morning in Birmingham – The Theory Behind Safe Testing
- What the Health & Safety Executive expects of anyone responsible for electrical equipment
- A plain-English walk through the current IET Code of Practice for in-service inspection and testing
- Where you stand under the Electricity at Work Regulations and what those duties mean day to day
- The different appliance classes you’ll come across and the right testing approach for each
- Carrying out thorough visual inspections, recognising faults early and keeping clear records
Afternoon in Birmingham – Testing for Real on the Machines
- Getting properly hands-on with professional PAT testing machines under tutor guidance
- Working through the correct test sequences across a mix of appliance types
- Picking up the faults that matter, both by eye and from the instrument readings
- Making sense of your results and turning them into accurate, defensible records
- Judging how often equipment should be retested based on its risk and where it’s used
Because the assessment is practical and runs throughout the day rather than ending in a written exam, you head back into your Birmingham workplace ready to put it straight to use.

Entry Requirements
No electrical experience is needed.
The course is delivered in plain, accessible language, making it ideal for complete beginners — and equally useful as a refresher if you already test in your Birmingham workplace and want to brush up in line with current best practice.
PAT Testing Certification
Pass the practical assessment and you’ll be awarded the Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate — a certificate of competence confirming you’ve been trained and assessed as able to carry out portable appliance testing properly.
One point trips a lot of people up, so it’s worth saying plainly: you do not need a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to test portable appliances legally in Birmingham or anywhere else in the UK.
UK health and safety law sets no specific qualification or certificate as a legal requirement — what it does require is that the person doing the testing is competent. The Health and Safety Executive frames competence as the right combination of training, knowledge and practical experience, which is precisely the foundation this one-day course is built to give you, alongside the current IET Code of Practice.
Your certificate then stands as clear, recognised evidence of that competence whenever employers, clients, insurers or auditors ask to see it. It carries no fixed legal expiry, though a refresher every few years is a sensible way to stay current.

Do I need any electrical knowledge before attending?
No prior electrical knowledge or qualifications are needed. Our Birmingham PAT testing course is designed for complete beginners and starts with the core principles of electrical safety before moving on to hands-on testing. It also works well as a structured refresher if you already work in the field and want to get up to date with the latest IET Code of Practice guidance.
Will I receive a recognised qualification?
Yes. On successful completion you'll receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, confirming you've been trained and assessed as competent in portable appliance testing. There's no legal requirement to hold a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to carry out PAT testing - UK health and safety law simply requires that the person doing the testing is competent, and your certificate is clear, recognised evidence of that.
Will I get hands-on experience?
Absolutely. The afternoon is built around practical, hands-on PAT testing. You'll use professional PAT testing machines to inspect and test a range of appliance classes, carry out visual inspections, spot common faults and record your results correctly, so you leave able to test confidently in a real workplace rather than just in theory.
Can I set up a PAT testing business after the course?
Yes - many of our Birmingham delegates take the course specifically to start their own PAT testing business. It gives you the practical competence and the certificate that clients and employers look for. From there you'll just need your own PAT testing equipment, suitable insurance and a little admin to begin offering portable appliance testing as a service.
Is lunch included?
Lunch isn't included, but tea, coffee and refreshments are available throughout the day. Our Birmingham venue (Tutors & Exams on Cox Street, in the Jewellery Quarter) has plenty of cafes, shops and places to eat nearby if you'd like to pick something up during the break.
Can I book multiple places?
Yes. Group and multiple-delegate bookings are welcome, which is ideal if you need to train several members of staff from the same company. Get in touch and we'll arrange the places together - we can also deliver on-site PAT testing training at your own premises on request.
Is there a final exam?
There's no stressful written exam. Assessment is practical and ongoing throughout the day: your trainer checks your understanding and your ability to carry out PAT testing safely and correctly as you go, so you're supported and assessed naturally rather than in one high-pressure sitting.
What should I wear?
Just wear comfortable, practical clothing suitable for hands-on work - there's no formal dress code. You'll be moving around and handling appliances and test equipment during the practical sessions, so come dressed to get stuck in. You don't need to bring any tools or PPE; we provide all the PAT testing equipment on the day.
Do you offer follow-up support?
Yes. Our support doesn't end when the course does - you're welcome to get in touch with any PAT testing questions afterwards, whether you're applying your new skills at work or setting up on your own. We're always happy to help with guidance on equipment, record-keeping and best practice.
Does the certification expire?
Your PAT testing certificate doesn't have a fixed legal expiry date. As good practice we'd recommend a refresher every few years to stay up to date with updates to the IET Code of Practice and changes in best practice, particularly if you test regularly or on a commercial basis.
