Is SMSTS the right course for you?
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme is for site managers, site agents, project managers and people preparing to take responsibility for construction work. It develops your understanding of site health, safety, welfare and environmental responsibilities.
If your role is supervising a team or work area, compare the two-day SSSTS course with your employer’s requirements. If you already hold a valid SMSTS certificate, the two-day SMSTS Refresher may be the appropriate route.
SMSTS supports your safety knowledge. It does not by itself prove competence for every site management task or award a CSCS card.
What you will learn
The CITB syllabus covers four areas of site management. Your instructor connects the principles to practical decisions on construction projects.
Legal and management responsibilities
Health and safety law, construction management duties, risk assessments, method statements, monitoring and accident reporting.
Health and welfare
Occupational health, welfare, hazardous substances and the effects of dust, noise and vibration on the workforce.
General site safety
Site organisation, electricity, plant and equipment, safe access, fire prevention and emergency arrangements.
High-risk activities
Planning and controlling work at height, excavations, confined spaces and work near underground or overhead services.
How live online training works
You join your instructor and fellow learners on Zoom at the scheduled time each day. You can ask questions, take part in discussions and work through course exercises together.
The full course runs over five consecutive weekdays, Monday to Friday. Attend all five days in full. Please arrange cover for your site duties so you can concentrate on the course.
Joining instructions explain how to access your class and course materials. Check them in advance and contact us if you need help with your setup.
Before you attend
- Your own laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and reliable internet connection.
- An individual email address and a quiet place where you can participate without interruptions.
- Original photo ID for the identity check. Follow the accepted-ID guidance in your joining instructions.
- A good understanding of written and spoken English for the discussions and assessment.
A mobile phone alone is not suitable. Let us know about learning, accessibility or technical support needs before booking.
Assessment and certification
Assessment includes four core exercises, a trainer review and an end-of-course examination. You must attend in full and pass the trainer review to sit the exam.
The exam has 25 questions and lasts 35 minutes. It combines multiple-choice, multi-response and short written answers. The pass mark is 26 out of 32 marks (81%). During the final 15 minutes, you may refer to GE700 and XA6. Your tutor explains the assessment arrangements during the course.
Successful learners receive a CITB SMSTS certificate, valid for five years. Complete the relevant Refresher before your certificate expires to keep it current.
Course materials and fees
The published course fee is £456 including VAT (£380 + VAT). Official CITB course materials are provided.
The full course uses CITB GE700 and XA6 publications. Keep your materials for reference after the course and activate any digital access before the assessment.
If you need a resit, eligibility and timing follow CITB rules. Ask us about arrangements and any charges; a free resit is not assumed.

Questions before you book
Is this self-paced e-learning?
No. You attend a scheduled live Zoom class with an instructor. Full attendance and participation are required on each course day.
Do I need a previous qualification?
There is no formal entry qualification. The course is for current or aspiring site managers, and relevant site health and safety knowledge is recommended. If you have no health and safety management experience, CITB recommends taking SSSTS first. Ask us if you are unsure which course suits your role.
What happens if I do not pass the exam?
CITB allows one exam resit for eligible learners scoring 23–25 out of 32. For the full course, the core exercises must be completed and the trainer review passed. An eligible resit can take place on the same day by agreement or within 30 days. Contact us for the arrangements and any charges. A score below 23 is not eligible for this exam resit. If you do not pass the resit, you need to attend the full five-day course again before another assessment.
Can my employer book several people?
Yes—all SMSTS group training is live online. Contact our team with the number of learners, preferred dates and any certificate expiry deadlines. Each remote learner needs their own suitable device and email address. We can explain the booking arrangements and discuss invoice or purchase-order requirements before you commit.
Can I claim CITB funding?
Funding depends on your employer’s eligibility and the CITB arrangements in place when you book. Check with CITB and our team before budgeting for a contribution.
What if I need learning support?
Tell us before booking about any learning, accessibility, language or technical support you may need. We can discuss the course and assessment requirements with you before you choose a date.
Where can I check cancellation and transfer terms?
