Course overview
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a nationally recognised CITB qualification designed for construction professionals responsible for planning, coordinating, or overseeing on-site activities. Widely accepted by principal contractors, local authorities, and major developers throughout the South West, it is an essential benchmark for competent site management.
This course is delivered in an online live classroom with a CITB-approved trainer, giving you full real-time interaction, expert support, and the opportunity to take part in group activities from any suitable location. The format mirrors a traditional classroom experience while offering greater flexibility for today’s busy construction professionals.
For businesses with six or more delegates, we can also deliver the full SMSTS programme on site at your Bristol workplace. Both training formats follow the complete CITB syllabus and lead to the same officially recognised SMSTS certification.

Entry Requirements

Course Materials
You will receive the official CITB Construction Site Safety GE700 publication, along with supplementary handouts and resources. These materials remain yours after the course and serve as valuable references for day-to-day site management.
Assessment
To successfully gain your SMSTS qualification, you must:
- Attend all five days of training
- Participate in group work and interactive discussions
- Complete daily knowledge checks
- Pass the final multiple-choice examination
This assessment structure ensures you understand key safety principles and can apply them confidently on active construction sites.
Qualification & Renewal
Upon completion, you will receive the CITB Site Safety Plus SMSTS Certificate, which is valid for five years. This qualification is widely required for supervisory and management positions across the UK construction sector.
To renew your qualification, you must complete the 2-day SMSTS Refresher Course before your current certificate expires.
