What ages does paediatric first aid cover?

A paediatric first aid course covers infants and children under 16-18. This contrasts with adult services, which are meant to serve as a risk response for those older than 16 years old. The standard demographic encouraged to undergo this kind of first aid are personnel in teaching jobs, daycare, and child-minding services (usually women in their 20s-40s). Young parents with children under the age of 10 are also highly encouraged to undergo this course, as most British parents are statistically incapable of providing the proper first aid for their children. What is the difference between first aid at work and paediatric first aid?

First aid at work is focused on adult medical emergencies in a workplace setting, while paediatric first aid is focused on medical emergencies in infants and children. First aid at work is typically taught to employees who work in high-risk environments or jobs that require them to work with heavy machinery or hazardous materials. Paediatric first aid training is typically taught to parents, teachers, and anyone who works with children, and covers topics such as how to recognise and respond to medical emergencies in children, including choking, seizures, and allergic reactions.

How many paediatric first aiders do I need?

The number of paediatric first aiders required depends on several factors, including the number of children in your care and the size of your organization. In general, it is recommended that at least one paediatric first aider is present for every 12 children in a setting. However, some organizations may choose to have more paediatric first aiders on staff in order to ensure that there is always someone available to provide first aid if needed. Additionally, it is important to ensure that there are enough paediatric first aiders on duty at all times, taking into account staff absences and holidays.

Can you fail a paediatric first aid course?

Yes, it is possible to fail a paediatric first aid course if you do not meet the required standard of knowledge and skills. Paediatric first aid courses are designed to teach essential skills and knowledge necessary to provide first aid to infants and children, and there are certain standards that must be met to successfully complete the course. If you do not demonstrate the necessary skills or knowledge to perform these tasks safely and effectively, you may be required to repeat parts of the course or take the entire course again.

WHAT DO YOU DO ON A PAEDIATRIC FIRST AID COURSE?

A paediatric course of this type will cover several emergency scenarios likely to involve a child. These include CPR, choking assistance, calling emergency services, and training to deal with panicking children. In addition, topics such as assessment of injuries, learning to deal with mild and severe injuries, anaphylactic shock, and unconscious adults are also covered.

Successful candidates will receive a personalised QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) e-Certificate as soon as their results are submitted.

Course Format

This course is delivered through a convenient blended learning model, combining:

6 hours of e-learning – complete in your own time, prior to your practical session
6 hours of face-to-face practical training – held at our modern Leicester training centre

Blended learning ensures you gain both theoretical knowledge and vital hands-on experience without the need to attend two full days of in-person training.

What the Course Covers

This comprehensive paediatric first aid course prepares you to confidently manage a range of medical emergencies involving infants and young children. Topics include:

CPR for babies and children
Recovery position techniques
Managing choking
Anaphylaxis and EpiPen administration
Febrile seizures, asthma and allergic reactions
Bleeding, burns and fractures
Head injuries and unconsciousness
Meningitis awareness
Safe incident reporting and record keeping

Entry Requirements

There are no formal academic requirements to enrol. However, learners must:

Be 16 years of age or older
Have the physical ability to demonstrate practical first aid techniques, including CPR on the floor
Have access to the internet and a device to complete the e-learning module before the practical session

The course is suitable for both new learners and those renewing a previous qualification.

This course is designed for:

Early years practitioners and nursery staff
Childminders and nannies
Teachers and teaching assistants in primary settings
Foster carers and children’s centre staff
Anyone responsible for the care of young children

This is the full paediatric first aid qualification required by Ofsted for early years settings, including those counted in the staff-to-child ratios.

Assessment & Certification

This course includes both practical and theoretical assessment to ensure learners can apply what they’ve learned in real-life situations. You’ll be assessed by a qualified instructor through:

Practical demonstrations (e.g. CPR, recovery position)
Multiple-choice questions
Participation in group scenarios and activities

On successful completion, you will receive the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF), valid for three years.

What is the difference between Emergency Paediatric First Aid and the Full Paediatric First Aid Course?

Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a 1-day course covering only essential life-saving skills. It includes CPR, the recovery position, and emergency response to choking and bleeding. It’s suitable for support roles in early years settings but does not meet the full requirements set by Ofsted or the EYFS for staff counted in staff-to-child ratios.

In contrast, the Full Paediatric First Aid Course (like the one we offer in Leicester) is a 2-day equivalent qualification delivered via blended learning. It includes everything in the Emergency course plus additional topics such as:

Anaphylaxis and auto-injectors

Head injuries and shock

Long-term medical conditions

More detailed treatment procedures

Incident reporting and safeguarding responsibilities

If you work in a nursery, school, or early years setting where you are counted in ratio, you must complete the full course.

Brilliant First Aid Training !
