Course overview
This is not a theory-only seminar. The day is structured to ensure you understand both the legal responsibilities surrounding electrical equipment and the practical steps involved in testing appliances properly.
Morning Session – Legal Responsibilities & Core Knowledge
The day begins with a clear explanation of the regulatory framework and safety principles that underpin PAT testing, including:
Employer duties under Health & Safety legislation
The Electricity at Work Regulations and what they mean in practice
Understanding the IET Code of Practice
Appliance classifications (Class I, Class II and extension leads)
The role of visual inspections in identifying hazards
Recognising common electrical faults
Maintaining accurate testing records
Setting appropriate retest frequencies based on risk
Everything is delivered in straightforward language, ensuring you understand not only what to do, but why it matters.
Afternoon Session – Supervised Practical Training
The afternoon focuses entirely on practical application. Under expert supervision, you will:
Operate professional PAT testing instruments
Test a variety of electrical appliances
Interpret test results confidently
Complete inspection labels and documentation correctly
Understand pass and fail criteria
Apply risk-based decision-making to future testing schedules
By the end of the session, you will have physically carried out PAT tests yourself and understand the full process from start to finish.
Course Duration
9:00am – 4:00pm (1 Day)
Entry Requirements
No prior electrical qualifications are required.
You do not need to be an electrician to attend. The law requires PAT testing to be carried out by a competent person — not someone holding a formal electrical qualification. This course is designed to give you the knowledge and practical skills to demonstrate that competence.
Beginners are welcome, and the course is delivered step by step to ensure everyone can follow comfortably.
Certification
On successful completion, you will receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate.
This certificate confirms you have been trained in line with current UK best practice, including the IET Code of Practice and guidance aligned with HSE expectations.
There is no mandatory government-issued licence for PAT testing. What matters is competence. This training provides the recognised foundation needed to carry out testing responsibly for employers, landlords or clients.
