Morning Session – The Rules, Standards & Why They Matter

We open by grounding you in the legal and technical framework that sits behind every test you’ll carry out, covering:

• What employers are legally obliged to do under Health & Safety legislation
• The IET Code of Practice, translated into plain, day-to-day terms
• The parts of the Electricity at Work Regulations you actually use
• How appliance classes differ and why each is tested its own way
• Working through a methodical visual inspection, step by step
• Spotting the faults that turn up most often in the field
• Logging results and keeping documentation that stands up to scrutiny

Afternoon Session – Testing for Real, with Support on Hand

After lunch the theory goes to work. Under a tutor’s eye, you’ll:

• Get hands-on with professional PAT testing equipment
• Run tests across a mix of different appliance types
• Read and make sense of the results each test produces
• Fill in inspection records accurately and in full
• Set sensible, risk-based retest intervals
• Decide the right next step when an appliance passes or fails

Because so much of this North London day is spent doing rather than listening, you’ll head home assessed as competent and ready to start testing straight away — and there’s no written exam to sit, just practical, ongoing assessment as you work.

Entry Requirements

No previous electrical experience is required. The course is structured in a clear, step-by-step format, making it suitable for beginners while still valuable for those refreshing existing knowledge.

PAT Testing Certification

Finish the day successfully and you’ll be awarded a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate — a certificate of competence confirming you’ve been trained and assessed as capable of testing portable appliances. Tea and coffee are provided throughout; lunch isn’t included, and all equipment is supplied on the day.

One myth is worth putting to bed straight away: you do not need a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to test portable appliances legally.

UK health and safety law names no particular qualification or certificate — what it asks for is simply that the person doing the testing is competent. The Health and Safety Executive describes competence as the right blend of training, knowledge and practical experience, which is precisely what this one-day North London course is built to give you, in line with the current IET Code of Practice.

Your certificate is therefore solid, recognised proof of that competence for employers, clients, insurers and auditors. There’s no fixed legal expiry date attached to it, though we’d suggest a refresher every few years to stay current. Group and multiple-delegate bookings are available, and we can also bring the training to your own premises on-site.
