Morning Session – The Rules & Why They Matter

We start in the classroom, where the theory is kept clear and jargon-free so it sticks. Across the morning you’ll cover:

• What the Health & Safety Executive actually expects from any business running electrical equipment
• A plain-English walkthrough of the current IET Code of Practice and how it shapes your testing
• Where your duties sit under the Electricity at Work Regulations
• Telling the appliance classes apart and adjusting your testing accordingly
• Spotting common faults through a thorough visual inspection — often the most important check of all
• Keeping clean, defensible records of everything you test

Afternoon Session – Testing for Real

After a tea or coffee break, you swap the desk for the test bench and put the morning into practice on professional PAT testing machines:

• Set up and run a professional PAT tester with a trainer at your shoulder
• Work through a genuine mix of appliances, from leads and kettles to IT and power tools
• Read your tester results and inspection findings and know what they’re telling you
• Log a pass or fail correctly and act on whatever the result demands
• Set sensible retest intervals that reflect the equipment, the setting and the risk

There’s no written exam — we assess you practically and continuously through the afternoon, so by the time you head back out across Fife you’ll be ready to test appliances correctly and safely on day one.

Entry Requirements

No prior electrical experience is necessary. The course is delivered in a clear, step-by-step format designed for beginners while still being valuable for those refreshing their knowledge.

PAT Testing Certification

Pass the practical assessment and you’ll walk away with a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate — a certificate of competence confirming you’ve been trained and assessed as capable of carrying out portable appliance testing. There’s no fixed legal expiry on it, though a refresher every few years is sensible to keep your knowledge current.

One point trips up a lot of Fife employers, so it’s worth saying plainly: you do not need a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to test portable appliances legally.

UK health and safety law names no particular certificate or qualification — what it insists on is that the person doing the testing is competent.
