    Course overview

Whether you handle maintenance for a Fife employer or want to add a sought-after skill to your own toolkit, this single day of training takes you from the rules behind PAT testing to confidently testing appliances yourself by close of play — competence you can actually use, not pages of notes you’ll never reopen.

Morning Session – The Rules & Why They Matter

We start in the classroom, where the theory is kept clear and jargon-free so it sticks. Across the morning you’ll cover:

    • What the Health & Safety Executive actually expects from any business running electrical equipment
    • A plain-English walkthrough of the current IET Code of Practice and how it shapes your testing
    • Where your duties sit under the Electricity at Work Regulations
    • Telling the appliance classes apart and adjusting your testing accordingly
    • Spotting common faults through a thorough visual inspection — often the most important check of all
    • Keeping clean, defensible records of everything you test

Afternoon Session – Testing for Real

After a tea or coffee break, you swap the desk for the test bench and put the morning into practice on professional PAT testing machines:

    • Set up and run a professional PAT tester with a trainer at your shoulder
    • Work through a genuine mix of appliances, from leads and kettles to IT and power tools
    • Read your tester results and inspection findings and know what they’re telling you
    • Log a pass or fail correctly and act on whatever the result demands
    • Set sensible retest intervals that reflect the equipment, the setting and the risk

There’s no written exam — we assess you practically and continuously through the afternoon, so by the time you head back out across Fife you’ll be ready to test appliances correctly and safely on day one.

    Course Duration

    9:00am – 4:00pm (1 Day)

    Entry Requirements

No prior electrical experience is necessary. The course is delivered in a clear, step-by-step format designed for beginners while still being valuable for those refreshing their knowledge.

    PAT Testing Certification

Pass the practical assessment and you’ll walk away with a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate — a certificate of competence confirming you’ve been trained and assessed as capable of carrying out portable appliance testing. There’s no fixed legal expiry on it, though a refresher every few years is sensible to keep your knowledge current.

One point trips up a lot of Fife employers, so it’s worth saying plainly: you do not need a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to test portable appliances legally.

UK health and safety law names no particular certificate or qualification — what it insists on is that the person doing the testing is competent. The Health and Safety Executive describes competence as the right blend of training, knowledge and hands-on experience, and that is precisely what this one-day course, aligned with the current IET Code of Practice, is built to give you.

Your certificate is straightforward, recognised proof of that competence — ready to put in front of employers, clients, insurers or auditors whenever they ask.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any previous electrical experience?

No prior electrical qualifications or background knowledge are required. This course is specifically structured for beginners and delivered in a clear, easy-to-follow format. Even if you have never used electrical testing equipment before, the step-by-step guidance and practical demonstrations will ensure you feel confident by the end of the day.

Is there practical, hands-on training included?

Yes. The afternoon session is fully practical. You will use professional PAT testing equipment under supervision, carry out inspections on different appliance classes, interpret readings correctly, and complete the necessary documentation. The course is designed to build genuine competence through doing, not just listening.

Will I receive a recognised certificate?

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate. This confirms that you have completed structured training in portable appliance testing in line with current UK guidance and recognised industry standards. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) accepts this type of training as suitable evidence of competency to carry out PAT testing safely in the workplace. Your certificate can therefore be used to demonstrate competence to employers, clients, and insurers where required.

Can this course help me start a PAT testing business?

Yes. The training provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to begin offering PAT testing as a service. While business setup guidance is not the main focus, you will leave with a clear understanding of testing procedures, compliance responsibilities, and record keeping — all essential for operating professionally.

Is there an assessment at the end of the course?

There is a short theory assessment along with a practical test at the end of the course. Throughout the day, your trainer will also monitor your progress during exercises to ensure you fully understand the procedures and can carry out testing safely and accurately.

We’re confident in the quality of our training, which is why we offer a 100% money-back guarantee if you do not pass the assessments.

What should I wear on the day?

Comfortable, practical clothing is recommended. As you will be working with electrical appliances and testing equipment during the afternoon session, casual attire suitable for light practical work is ideal.

    Is lunch included?

Lunch is not included in the course. The training centre is located next to Asda, and there are often local food vans nearby, giving you convenient options during the lunch break.

Tea and coffee are provided at the centre throughout the day.

Can I book multiple delegates from my company?

Yes. We regularly accommodate group bookings for businesses. If you are enrolling several team members, please contact us to arrange suitable dates and ensure availability.

Do you provide support after the course?

Yes. If you have questions once you begin carrying out PAT testing in your workplace, you can contact us for guidance. We aim to ensure you feel supported even after completing your training.

How long does the certification last?

There is no formal expiry date for the certificate. However, refresher training is recommended periodically to ensure you remain aligned with the latest guidance, best practice, and any updates to regulations.

What equipment will I be trained on?

You will use professional PAT testing instruments similar to those used in real workplace environments. This ensures the skills you gain are directly transferable and practical.

Do I need to bring my own PAT testing equipment?

No, you do not need to bring any equipment with you. All PAT testing instruments and appliances required for the practical session are provided on the day. Please note that training equipment is for in-class use only and cannot be taken away after the course.
