Course overview
This course combines essential legal knowledge with supervised practical testing, ensuring you understand both the regulations and the real-world application of PAT testing.
Morning Session – Legal Duties & Electrical Safety Essentials
The day begins with structured classroom learning covering:
Employer responsibilities under Health & Safety law
The Electricity at Work Regulations explained in practical terms
Understanding the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing
Appliance classifications and testing methods
The importance of detailed visual inspections
Identifying common appliance faults
Accurate record keeping and labelling
How to determine appropriate retest intervals using risk-based assessment
You’ll gain clarity on what the law requires, what is considered best practice, and how to demonstrate compliance if ever required to do so.
Afternoon Session – Hands-On Practical Training
The afternoon is dedicated to supervised appliance testing. You will:
Use professional PAT testing equipment
Test a range of electrical appliances
Interpret readings accurately
Complete inspection records and labels correctly
Understand pass and fail criteria
Learn appropriate actions following failed results
The focus is on practical competence. You will physically carry out tests yourself, ensuring you feel confident applying your knowledge in real environments.
Course Duration
9:00am – 4:00pm (1 Day)
Entry Requirements
No previous electrical experience is required.
You do not need to be a qualified electrician. UK law requires PAT testing to be completed by a competent person — not someone holding a formal electrical qualification. This course is specifically designed to provide that competence in a clear, structured and accessible way.
Beginners are fully supported throughout.
Certification
On successful completion, you will receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate.
This certificate confirms you have been trained in accordance with current UK best practice and guidance, including the IET Code of Practice and standards aligned with HSE expectations.
There is no legally mandated qualification for PAT testing. Competence is what matters — and this course provides the knowledge and practical ability required to meet that standard.
