Course overview
Booked the day off and not sure what to expect? Our West London PAT testing course packs both halves of the job into a single working day — the rules that sit behind portable appliance testing in the morning, and real hands-on testing after lunch. By the time you head home, you’ll have tested live appliances yourself and will know exactly how to repeat the process back at your own workplace.
Morning Session – The Rules & the Reasoning
We open the West London course in the classroom, walking through the safety framework that every tester needs to be confident with before touching a machine:
- What employers are responsible for under Health & Safety legislation
- How the Electricity at Work Regulations translate into day-to-day testing
- Working with the current IET Code of Practice
- Telling appliance classes apart — Class I, Class II and extension leads
- Spotting hazards through a thorough visual inspection
- Knowing the everyday faults that turn up most often
- Keeping testing records that stand up to scrutiny
- Judging sensible retest intervals from the level of risk
There’s no jargon for its own sake here — each topic is explained plainly so you grasp the reason behind every step, not just the step itself.
Afternoon Session – Testing for Real, With a Tutor Beside You
After lunch the West London group swaps theory for the bench. With a tutor guiding you throughout, you’ll:
- Get hands-on with professional PAT testing machines
- Run tests across a mix of different appliances
- Read what the results are telling you and act on them
- Fill out pass/fail labels and paperwork the right way
- Work out clearly when an item passes and when it doesn’t
- Set future testing schedules around the risk each item carries
This is where the practical, ongoing assessment happens — there’s no written exam, just your own testing watched and confirmed. You’ll finish the day having handled the whole process yourself, with all equipment supplied on the day, tea and coffee laid on (lunch isn’t included) and a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate to take away.
Course Duration
9:00am – 4:00pm (1 Day)
Entry Requirements
No prior electrical qualifications are required.
You do not need to be an electrician to attend. The law requires PAT testing to be carried out by a competent person — not someone holding a formal electrical qualification. This course is designed to give you the knowledge and practical skills to demonstrate that competence.
Beginners are welcome, and the course is delivered step by step to ensure everyone can follow comfortably.
PAT Testing Certification
Finish the West London course and you’ll be issued a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate — a certificate of competence confirming you’ve been trained and assessed as able to carry out portable appliance testing on your own.
One point catches a lot of people out, so it’s worth being clear: you don’t have to hold a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to test portable appliances legally.
UK health and safety law names no particular certificate or course at all — what it does insist on is that the person doing the testing is competent. The Health and Safety Executive describes that competence as the right blend of training, knowledge and practical experience, and it’s exactly what this one-day course, aligned with the current IET Code of Practice, is built to give you.
That makes your certificate solid, recognised evidence of your competence whenever an employer, client, insurer or auditor asks how you’re qualified to test. There’s no fixed legal expiry on it, though we’d suggest a refresher every few years to stay current — and this same course works just as well as that refresher. Training larger teams? Group and multiple-delegate places, plus on-site sessions at your own West London premises, can all be arranged.

Do I need any electrical background?
Not at all. Our West London (Isleworth) PAT testing course is built for complete beginners, so no prior electrical knowledge is needed. We start with the theory in the morning and build up to hands-on portable appliance testing in the afternoon. It also works well as a refresher if you already have some experience and want to brush up.
Is the training practical?
Yes, very much so. The morning covers the theory, then the afternoon is dedicated to hands-on PAT testing using professional PAT testing machines. You will actually test appliances yourself rather than just watching. This practical focus is what makes our Isleworth course so popular in West London for building real, usable competence quickly.
Is the certificate recognised?
On completion you receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, a certificate of competence. UK health and safety law and the HSE require the person doing the testing to be competent; there is no requirement to hold a specific qualification. This course and certificate are recognised evidence of that competence, aligned with the current IET Code of Practice.
Can I start charging for PAT testing after this course?
Yes. Once you complete the day at our West London (Isleworth) venue, you will have the practical skills and a certificate of competence to carry out portable appliance testing, including for paying clients. There is no legal requirement for a formal qualification like City and Guilds 2377; the law requires competence, which this course is designed to build.
Is there an exam?
No stressful written exam. Assessment is practical and ongoing throughout the day, so your trainer checks your understanding as you carry out the hands-on PAT testing in the afternoon. That relaxed approach suits both nervous beginners and experienced learners, and it is one reason people travel to our Isleworth course from across West London.
What should I bring?
Honestly, just yourself and a willingness to learn. All PAT testing equipment is provided, so you do not need any tools or your own tester. Tea and coffee are available through the day at our West London (Isleworth) venue, though lunch is not included, so you may want to bring lunch or pop out locally.
Do I need my own PAT tester?
No. We supply all the PAT testing equipment, including professional PAT testing machines you will use during the practical afternoon session in Isleworth. You do not need to buy or bring a tester to attend. This lets you learn proper portable appliance testing technique first, then choose the right tester for your own work afterwards if needed.
What should I wear?
Just wear comfortable, practical clothing. There is no formal dress code for the West London (Isleworth) course, but since the afternoon involves hands-on PAT testing of appliances, sensible everyday workwear is ideal. You will be moving around and handling equipment, so comfort matters more than anything formal. Closed, comfortable footwear is a good idea.
How long is the certificate valid?
Your Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate has no fixed legal expiry date. As good practice, we recommend a refresher every few years to stay current with the IET Code of Practice and keep your competence sharp. Many people return to our West London (Isleworth) course for that top-up once they have been testing for a while.
Can employers send multiple staff members?
Absolutely. Group and multiple-delegate bookings are very welcome on our West London (Isleworth) PAT testing course. If you would rather we came to you, on-site training at your own premises is available on request, which is handy for businesses across West London wanting several staff trained together in portable appliance testing without travelling.
Is ongoing support available?
Yes. Your trainer is on hand throughout the West London (Isleworth) day to answer questions as you work through the practical PAT testing. Because there is no fixed certificate expiry, we recommend a refresher every few years, and you are always welcome to return to our Isleworth course to update your skills and competence.
How much does the PAT testing course cost?
The one-day course is 195 pounds plus VAT and runs from 9am to 4pm at our West London (Isleworth) venue. That covers theory in the morning, hands-on portable appliance testing in the afternoon with all equipment provided, and your certificate of competence. Tea and coffee are available through the day, though lunch is not included.
