    Course overview

Liverpool is a city that runs on busy, people-heavy spaces, from the bars and student lets around Ranelagh Street and Bold Street to the offices in the commercial district, the venues along the waterfront and the thousands of rented homes across Merseyside. Every one of those places relies on portable electrical appliances that need to be safe and, in most cases, tested. Our one-day PAT Testing Course gives you the knowledge and the hands-on confidence to inspect and test those appliances properly, whether you are doing it for your own business, for an employer, or as a new service you plan to offer around Liverpool and the wider North West.

The course is designed for complete beginners just as much as for people who already work in a trade. You do not need any previous electrical knowledge and you do not need to bring any equipment. We supply everything on the day, including the professional PAT testing machines you will use in the practical session, so you can turn up, learn and get stuck in.

    Venue

The Liverpool course is delivered at our city-centre training venue:

Ranelagh St, Liverpool, Merseyside, L3 5UL

The location sits right in the middle of the city, so it is straightforward to reach by car and by public transport, and it is a convenient base if you are travelling in from elsewhere across Liverpool and Merseyside. We will confirm the exact room and any arrival instructions in your joining details before the day, so you know precisely where to go when you get to Ranelagh Street.

    What you will learn

The day is split into a theory-focused morning and a practical, hands-on afternoon, so you build understanding first and then put it straight into practice.

    Morning — theory:

    • Why PAT testing matters and what UK law and HSE expectations actually require of you and your organisation.
    • The current IET Code of Practice for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment, and how it guides your work.
    • The different classes of electrical appliance and how to identify them correctly.
    • How to carry out thorough visual inspections and spot the common faults that cause most failures.
    • How to set sensible re-test intervals based on the appliance and the environment it is used in — something that matters just as much for a quiet office as for a busy Liverpool bar or gym.

    Afternoon — practical:

    • Using professional PAT testing machines confidently and safely.
    • Running the correct tests on a range of appliances and understanding what each test is checking.
    • Interpreting your results so you can tell straight away whether an item has passed or failed, and why.
    • Accurate record-keeping, so your testing stands up to scrutiny and gives you a clear, defensible history for every appliance.

By the end of the afternoon you will have tested real appliances yourself, under the guidance of your trainer, rather than just watched a demonstration. That practical, ongoing assessment is how we make sure you leave genuinely able to do the job.

    Duration

The course runs for one full day, from 9am to 4pm. That single day covers everything you need to start PAT testing competently. Tea and coffee are provided throughout the day. Lunch is not included, but the Ranelagh Street location puts you within easy reach of plenty of cafes, sandwich shops and lunch spots in the city centre, so it is easy to grab something during the break.

    Entry requirements

There are only two requirements to join. You must be aged 18 or over, and that is genuinely it — you do not need any previous electrical qualifications, experience or knowledge. The course is built to take you from a standing start to competent, so whether you are a landlord looking after properties across Liverpool, a caretaker or facilities officer, someone in the events and hospitality trade, or simply someone looking to add a practical, in-demand skill, you are in the right place.

    PAT Testing Certification

There is no written exam on this course. Instead, you are assessed practically and continuously throughout the day, so your trainer can see you working correctly with the equipment rather than testing your memory on paper. On successful completion you receive the Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, which demonstrates that you can carry out portable appliance testing to a professional standard.

Skills Training Group is backed by more than 1,000 five-star Trustpilot reviews, so you can book your Liverpool place with confidence. If you have a team who all need training, we can also arrange group bookings at the Ranelagh Street venue — just get in touch and we will help you find a date that works. Book now to secure your spot on the next available Liverpool course and get PAT qualified in a single day.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What qualification will I receive?

When you finish our Liverpool PAT testing course you receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, a recognised certificate of competence. There is no legal requirement to hold a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to carry out portable appliance testing; UK health and safety law and the HSE simply require you to be competent, and this certificate is solid evidence of that.

Is the certificate recognised by employers?

Yes. Employers in Liverpool and beyond accept our PAT Testing Certificate as proof of competence. Because UK law and the HSE require whoever does portable appliance testing to be competent rather than formally qualified, our certificate, backed by training aligned with the current IET Code of Practice, gives employers the documented reassurance they are looking for.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the course?

No tools or equipment needed. We provide all the professional PAT testing machines you will use during the hands-on afternoon in Liverpool, so there is no need to bring your own tester. Just turn up with a pen and a willingness to learn. Tea and coffee are available through the day, though lunch is not included, so plan for that.

Will I get hands-on experience during the course?

Absolutely. The morning in Liverpool covers the theory, then the whole afternoon is hands-on, with you carrying out real portable appliance testing on the professional machines we supply. This practical focus means you leave genuinely confident using the equipment, not just having read about it. Assessment is ongoing through the day, so there is no stressful written exam.

Who is the course suitable for?

Our Liverpool PAT testing course welcomes complete beginners with no prior electrical knowledge, as well as experienced people wanting a refresher. The day is built around hands-on practice on professional PAT testing machines, so whatever your starting point, you finish able to test confidently. Group bookings are welcome, and we can deliver on-site at your own premises on request.

Can I book for multiple people from my company?

Yes, group and multiple-delegate bookings are very welcome. Plenty of Liverpool businesses send several staff together to build in-house PAT testing competence. If it suits you better, we can deliver the training on-site at your own premises on request, saving travel time while still covering everything in line with the current IET Code of Practice.

    Is lunch provided?

Lunch is not included on our Liverpool PAT testing course, so plan to bring something or grab lunch locally during the break. We do keep you going with tea and coffee through the day. The course runs 9am to 4pm, giving you time to refuel before the hands-on practical PAT testing session that fills the afternoon.

Will I be able to test all types of electrical equipment after the course?

You will leave able to carry out portable appliance testing on the everyday equipment PAT covers, using the techniques you practise in Liverpool on our professional machines. The training follows the current IET Code of Practice for in-service inspection and testing, giving you the competence and the certificate to handle the appliances you will meet in real workplaces.

Do I need to take an exam?

No. There is no stressful written exam on our Liverpool PAT testing course. Assessment is practical and ongoing through the day, so your competence is judged as you work with the PAT testing machines in the afternoon. It is a relaxed, supportive way to learn, well suited to beginners and experienced people brushing up alike.

How soon after the course will I receive my certificate?

You receive your Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate on completion of the Liverpool course, so you leave the same day with documented proof of competence to show employers. The certificate has no fixed legal expiry, though we recommend a refresher every few years as good practice to keep your portable appliance testing knowledge current.
