What you will learn

The day is split into a theory-led morning and a practical, equipment-based afternoon, so the knowledge you gain in the classroom is immediately reinforced with hands-on testing.

Morning — the theory that underpins safe testing:

• Why portable appliance testing matters, and the real-world consequences of getting it wrong
• UK law and the expectations of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) around electrical safety
• The current IET Code of Practice for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
• The different classes of electrical appliance and why the distinction matters when you test
• Visual inspections and the common faults you will encounter in the field
• How to set sensible re-test intervals for different appliances and environments

Afternoon — hands-on practical testing:

• Using professional PAT testing machines correctly and safely
• Carrying out both the visual inspection and the instrument tests in the right order
• Interpreting the results your machine gives you and knowing a pass from a fail
• Accurate record-keeping so your testing stands up to scrutiny

All equipment is supplied on the day, so there is nothing you need to bring with you beyond a willingness to get stuck in. By the time you leave the Castle Cavendish Enterprise Centre, you will have handled the machines, run through the full process for yourself and had your questions answered by an experienced tutor.

Duration

This is a one-day course, running from 9am to 4pm. That single day covers both the theory and the practical assessment, so you complete your training and walk away certified without needing to return for a second day. Tea and coffee are provided throughout; please note that lunch is not included, though there are options within reach of the venue and a short break is built into the day.

Entry requirements

The course is genuinely open to everyone aged 18 or over.
