    Course overview

If your role involves keeping electrical equipment safe, whether you manage a shop or office in Nottingham city centre, look after a school or care home across Nottinghamshire, or run a maintenance team on an industrial estate out toward Bulwell or Beeston, our one-day PAT Testing Course gives you exactly what you need to do the job properly. In a single day you move from wondering how portable appliance testing actually works to being able to inspect, test and record electrical appliances with real confidence. The course is deliberately practical: a focused morning of theory followed by a hands-on afternoon on professional PAT testing machines, so you leave able to put your learning straight to work.

Portable appliance testing sits behind a great deal of everyday safety that most people never think about. Every extension lead, kettle, drill, monitor and floor cleaner in a workplace is an appliance that can develop a fault, and the person who checks them needs to know what they are looking at. This course is built around the decisions you will make in the field rather than electrical theory for its own sake, which is why it suits people from so many different backgrounds across the East Midlands, from facilities and maintenance staff to landlords, caretakers, office managers and tradespeople looking to add a genuinely useful skill.

    Venue

Our Nottingham PAT Testing Course is held at:

Castle Cavendish Enterprise Centre, 63-67 Saint Peter’s Street, Nottingham NG7 3EN.

The centre is well placed for delegates travelling in from across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands, and is accessible both by car and by public transport. We recommend allowing a little extra time on the morning of your course so you can arrive, settle in and be ready for a prompt 9am start. If you have any specific questions about reaching the venue or about access on the day, our team is happy to help before you book.

    What you will learn

The day is split into a theory-led morning and a practical, equipment-based afternoon, so the knowledge you gain in the classroom is immediately reinforced with hands-on testing.

Morning — the theory that underpins safe testing:

    • Why portable appliance testing matters, and the real-world consequences of getting it wrong
    • UK law and the expectations of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) around electrical safety
    • The current IET Code of Practice for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
    • The different classes of electrical appliance and why the distinction matters when you test
    • Visual inspections and the common faults you will encounter in the field
    • How to set sensible re-test intervals for different appliances and environments

    Afternoon — hands-on practical testing:

    • Using professional PAT testing machines correctly and safely
    • Carrying out both the visual inspection and the instrument tests in the right order
    • Interpreting the results your machine gives you and knowing a pass from a fail
    • Accurate record-keeping so your testing stands up to scrutiny

All equipment is supplied on the day, so there is nothing you need to bring with you beyond a willingness to get stuck in. By the time you leave the Castle Cavendish Enterprise Centre, you will have handled the machines, run through the full process for yourself and had your questions answered by an experienced tutor.

    Duration

This is a one-day course, running from 9am to 4pm. That single day covers both the theory and the practical assessment, so you complete your training and walk away certified without needing to return for a second day. Tea and coffee are provided throughout; please note that lunch is not included, though there are options within reach of the venue and a short break is built into the day.

    Entry requirements

The course is genuinely open to everyone aged 18 or over. You do not need any previous electrical knowledge or experience to attend, which is what makes it such a popular first step for people moving into facilities, maintenance or property work across Nottingham and the East Midlands. Equally, if you already work with electrical equipment and simply need to formalise your competence in portable appliance testing, the day gives you the current best-practice framework and the confidence to apply it. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced tradesperson, you will be working at a level that suits you.

    PAT Testing Certification

There is no written exam on this course. Assessment is practical and ongoing throughout the day, with your tutor observing as you carry out visual inspections and use the PAT testing machines. This approach reflects how the skill is actually used on the job, and it takes the pressure off delegates who might otherwise be anxious about a formal test. On successful completion you receive the Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, recognised evidence that you have been trained to inspect and test portable appliances in line with the current IET Code of Practice.

The Skills Training Group is trusted by thousands of learners, with more than 1,000 five-star Trustpilot reviews behind our training. Frequently Asked Questions

    What qualification will I receive?

When you finish our Nottingham PAT testing course you receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, a recognised certificate of competence. There is no legal requirement to hold a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to carry out portable appliance testing; UK health and safety law and the HSE simply require you to be competent, and this certificate is solid evidence of that.

Is the certificate recognised by employers?

Yes. Employers in Nottingham and beyond accept our PAT Testing Certificate as proof of competence. Because UK law and the HSE require whoever does portable appliance testing to be competent rather than formally qualified, our certificate, backed by training aligned with the current IET Code of Practice, gives employers the documented reassurance they are looking for.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the course?

No tools or equipment needed. We provide all the professional PAT testing machines you will use during the hands-on afternoon in Nottingham, so there is no need to bring your own tester. Just turn up with a pen and a willingness to learn. Tea and coffee are available through the day, though lunch is not included, so plan for that.

Will I get hands-on experience during the course?

Absolutely. The morning in Nottingham covers the theory, then the whole afternoon is hands-on, with you carrying out real portable appliance testing on the professional machines we supply. This practical focus means you leave genuinely confident using the equipment, not just having read about it. Assessment is ongoing through the day, so there is no stressful written exam.

Who is the course suitable for?

Our Nottingham PAT testing course welcomes complete beginners with no prior electrical knowledge, as well as experienced people wanting a refresher. The day is built around hands-on practice on professional PAT testing machines, so whatever your starting point, you finish able to test confidently. Group bookings are welcome, and we can deliver on-site at your own premises on request.

Can I book for multiple people from my company?

Yes, group and multiple-delegate bookings are very welcome. Plenty of Nottingham businesses send several staff together to build in-house PAT testing competence. If it suits you better, we can deliver the training on-site at your own premises on request, saving travel time while still covering everything in line with the current IET Code of Practice.

    Is lunch provided?

Lunch is not included on our Nottingham PAT testing course, so plan to bring something or grab lunch locally during the break. We do keep you going with tea and coffee through the day. The course runs 9am to 4pm, giving you time to refuel before the hands-on practical PAT testing session that fills the afternoon.

Will I be able to test all types of electrical equipment after the course?

You will leave able to carry out portable appliance testing on the everyday equipment PAT covers, using the techniques you practise in Nottingham on our professional machines. The training follows the current IET Code of Practice for in-service inspection and testing, giving you the competence and the certificate to handle the appliances you will meet in real workplaces.

Do I need to take an exam?

No. There is no stressful written exam on our Nottingham PAT testing course. Assessment is practical and ongoing through the day, so your competence is judged as you work with the PAT testing machines in the afternoon. It is a relaxed, supportive way to learn, well suited to beginners and experienced people brushing up alike.

How soon after the course will I receive my certificate?

You receive your Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate on completion of the Nottingham course, so you leave the same day with documented proof of competence to show employers. The certificate has no fixed legal expiry, though we recommend a refresher every few years as good practice to keep your portable appliance testing knowledge current.
