Venue

The course is delivered in person at St Martins House Conference Centre & Lodge, 7 Peacock Ln, Leicester LE1 5PZ. It is a comfortable, well-equipped training venue right in the heart of the city, a short step from the Cathedral and Leicester’s Lanes, which makes it an easy and central base for delegates travelling in from across Leicestershire and the wider East Midlands.

Getting there: the venue is accessible both by car and by public transport, sitting in central Leicester within easy reach of the city’s main road and rail links. We would simply suggest planning your journey in advance and allowing a little extra time to arrive for a prompt 9am start. What you will learn

The day is split into a theory-focused morning and a practical, hands-on afternoon, so you build understanding first and then put it straight into practice on professional PAT testing machines.

Morning — the theory:

• Why PAT testing matters, and what UK law and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) actually expect of employers and duty holders
• The current IET Code of Practice for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
• The different classes of electrical appliance and how to tell them apart
• Carrying out thorough visual inspections and spotting the common faults that cause most failures
• How to set sensible re-test intervals based on the appliance and its environment

Afternoon — the practical:

• Using professional PAT testing machines safely and correctly
• Working through a range of appliances hands-on, exactly as you would back at work
• Interpreting your results and deciding confidently whether an item passes or fails
• Keeping clear, compliant records and labelling appliances properly
• Putting the whole testing routine together so you can repeat it independently

All equipment is supplied on the day, so there is nothing you need to bring or buy in advance. You will practise on the same kind of testers you would use in the field, which is why so many delegates walk out ready to start testing straight away.

Duration

This is a one-day course, running from 9am to 4pm. That single day covers everything you need to test appliances competently and issue reliable records, without stretching the training over more time than the subject requires. Tea and coffee are provided throughout the day; lunch is not included, though there are plenty of places to grab something to eat within a short walk of the venue in central Leicester.

Entry requirements

You need to be 18 or over, and that is the only firm requirement. No previous electrical knowledge or qualifications are needed, and the course suits complete beginners and experienced hands alike. If you have never opened a plug in your life you will be fine; if you already work with electrics, you will find the day sharpens your inspection and record-keeping to a recognised standard. All you need to bring is yourself and a willingness to get stuck into the practical work.

PAT Testing Certification

There is no written exam. Assessment is entirely practical and ongoing, carried out by your tutor as you work through the appliances during the afternoon, so there is no test to revise for and no anxious sit-down paper at the end. On successful completion you receive the Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, evidence you can show to an employer, a client, an insurer or a landlord that you are competent to carry out portable appliance testing.
