    Course overview

Across Leicester, from a solicitor’s office on New Walk to a busy workshop out at Glenfield, the same quiet question comes up again and again: is this appliance actually safe to use? Answering it with confidence — and being able to prove you have — is exactly what portable appliance testing is for, and increasingly employers, insurers and landlords want to see that the person doing it holds a recognised qualification. Our one-day PAT Testing Course gives you that: the underlying knowledge, the hands-on skill and the certificate to test electrical appliances competently and to record your findings the way an inspector, an insurer or a landlord would expect.

The course is built for real working life in and around Leicester. Whether you are a caretaker at a city school, a facilities manager for a Leicester business, a landlord looking after student lets near the universities, an electrician adding PAT to your services, or someone simply asked by an employer to "get PAT trained", you will leave able to do the job properly and confidently. No previous electrical background is assumed, and nothing on the day is beyond a complete beginner.

    Venue

The course is delivered in person at St Martins House Conference Centre & Lodge, 7 Peacock Ln, Leicester LE1 5PZ. It is a comfortable, well-equipped training venue right in the heart of the city, a short step from the Cathedral and Leicester’s Lanes, which makes it an easy and central base for delegates travelling in from across Leicestershire and the wider East Midlands.

Getting there: the venue is accessible both by car and by public transport, sitting in central Leicester within easy reach of the city’s main road and rail links. We would simply suggest planning your journey in advance and allowing a little extra time to arrive for a prompt 9am start. If you are unsure about the best way in on the day, our team is happy to point you in the right direction when you book.

    What you will learn

The day is split into a theory-focused morning and a practical, hands-on afternoon, so you build understanding first and then put it straight into practice on professional PAT testing machines.

    Morning — the theory:

    • Why PAT testing matters, and what UK law and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) actually expect of employers and duty holders
    • The current IET Code of Practice for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
    • The different classes of electrical appliance and how to tell them apart
    • Carrying out thorough visual inspections and spotting the common faults that cause most failures
    • How to set sensible re-test intervals based on the appliance and its environment

    Afternoon — the practical:

    • Using professional PAT testing machines safely and correctly
    • Working through a range of appliances hands-on, exactly as you would back at work
    • Interpreting your results and deciding confidently whether an item passes or fails
    • Keeping clear, compliant records and labelling appliances properly
    • Putting the whole testing routine together so you can repeat it independently

All equipment is supplied on the day, so there is nothing you need to bring or buy in advance. You will practise on the same kind of testers you would use in the field, which is why so many delegates walk out ready to start testing straight away.

    Duration

This is a one-day course, running from 9am to 4pm. That single day covers everything you need to test appliances competently and issue reliable records, without stretching the training over more time than the subject requires. Tea and coffee are provided throughout the day; lunch is not included, though there are plenty of places to grab something to eat within a short walk of the venue in central Leicester.

    Entry requirements

You need to be 18 or over, and that is the only firm requirement. No previous electrical knowledge or qualifications are needed, and the course suits complete beginners and experienced hands alike. If you have never opened a plug in your life you will be fine; if you already work with electrics, you will find the day sharpens your inspection and record-keeping to a recognised standard. All you need to bring is yourself and a willingness to get stuck into the practical work.

    PAT Testing Certification

There is no written exam. Assessment is entirely practical and ongoing, carried out by your tutor as you work through the appliances during the afternoon, so there is no test to revise for and no anxious sit-down paper at the end. On successful completion you receive the Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, evidence you can show to an employer, a client, an insurer or a landlord that you are competent to carry out portable appliance testing. Our training is backed by more than 1,000 five-star Trustpilot reviews, so you can book your Leicester place knowing you are learning with a provider people across the country rate highly.

The course is priced at £195 + VAT, with all equipment and refreshments included. To secure a place on a Leicester date, book online or speak to our team, who are happy to help with individual bookings or to arrange training for a group from the same organisation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What qualification will I receive?

When you finish our Leicester PAT testing course you receive a Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate, a recognised certificate of competence. There is no legal requirement to hold a formal qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 to carry out portable appliance testing; UK health and safety law and the HSE simply require you to be competent, and this certificate is solid evidence of that.

Is the certificate recognised by employers?

Yes. Employers in Leicester and beyond accept our PAT Testing Certificate as proof of competence. Because UK law and the HSE require whoever does portable appliance testing to be competent rather than formally qualified, our certificate, backed by training aligned with the current IET Code of Practice, gives employers the documented reassurance they are looking for.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the course?

No tools or equipment needed. We provide all the professional PAT testing machines you will use during the hands-on afternoon in Leicester, so there is no need to bring your own tester. Just turn up with a pen and a willingness to learn. Tea and coffee are available through the day, though lunch is not included, so plan for that.

Will I get hands-on experience during the course?

Absolutely. The morning in Leicester covers the theory, then the whole afternoon is hands-on, with you carrying out real portable appliance testing on the professional machines we supply. This practical focus means you leave genuinely confident using the equipment, not just having read about it. Assessment is ongoing through the day, so there is no stressful written exam.

Who is the course suitable for?

Our Leicester PAT testing course welcomes complete beginners with no prior electrical knowledge, as well as experienced people wanting a refresher. The day is built around hands-on practice on professional PAT testing machines, so whatever your starting point, you finish able to test confidently. Group bookings are welcome, and we can deliver on-site at your own premises on request.

Can I book for multiple people from my company?

Yes, group and multiple-delegate bookings are very welcome. Plenty of Leicester businesses send several staff together to build in-house PAT testing competence. If it suits you better, we can deliver the training on-site at your own premises on request, saving travel time while still covering everything in line with the current IET Code of Practice.

    Is lunch provided?

Lunch is not included on our Leicester PAT testing course, so plan to bring something or grab lunch locally during the break. We do keep you going with tea and coffee through the day. The course runs 9am to 4pm, giving you time to refuel before the hands-on practical PAT testing session that fills the afternoon.

Will I be able to test all types of electrical equipment after the course?

You will leave able to carry out portable appliance testing on the everyday equipment PAT covers, using the techniques you practise in Leicester on our professional machines. The training follows the current IET Code of Practice for in-service inspection and testing, giving you the competence and the certificate to handle the appliances you will meet in real workplaces.

Do I need to take an exam?

No. There is no stressful written exam on our Leicester PAT testing course. Assessment is practical and ongoing through the day, so your competence is judged as you work with the PAT testing machines in the afternoon. It is a relaxed, supportive way to learn, well suited to beginners and experienced people brushing up alike.

How soon after the course will I receive my certificate?

You receive your Skills Training Group PAT Testing Certificate on completion of the Leicester course, so you leave the same day with documented proof of competence to show employers. The certificate has no fixed legal expiry, though we recommend a refresher every few years as good practice to keep your portable appliance testing knowledge current.
