Once you arrive, everything you need for the course is provided on site, including the PAT testing machines and the appliances you will practise on, so there is nothing for you to bring along except yourself. Tea and coffee are provided through the day; please note that lunch is not included, so you may want to bring something with you or plan to pop out to one of the nearby options at the break.

What you will learn

The day is split into two halves. The morning is spent in the classroom building the underpinning knowledge, and the afternoon puts that knowledge straight to work on the equipment, so you leave able to actually carry out testing rather than simply having heard about it.

The theory session in the morning covers:

• Why portable appliance testing matters, and what UK law and the HSE actually expect of employers, landlords and duty holders
• The current IET Code of Practice for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
• The different classes of electrical appliance and how to tell them apart
• How to carry out a thorough visual inspection and recognise the common faults that show up in day-to-day use
• How to set sensible re-test intervals for different types of equipment and environment

The practical session in the afternoon is hands-on throughout. Working on professional PAT testing machines, you will:

• Use the test instruments correctly on a range of real appliances
• Run the full sequence of tests and understand what each one is checking for
• Interpret the results the machine gives you and decide whether an item passes or fails
• Keep clear, compliant records and label appliances so anyone can see at a glance when they were last tested

By the end of the afternoon you will have tested a variety of items yourself under the guidance of the tutor, which is the part that turns classroom understanding into genuine confidence. It is one thing to read about a Class I appliance; it is another to have put a kettle, an extension lead and a piece of office equipment through their paces and read the results for yourself.

Duration

The PAT Testing Course is a single day, running from 9am to 4pm. Assessment is practical and ongoing: the tutor works alongside you through the afternoon, watching how you handle the equipment and checking your understanding as you go, rather than sitting you down to a formal paper at the end.
